Since the Intellectual Property Code took effect on January 1 1998, the only significant IP-related law passed to date has been the E-Commerce Act, Republic Act No 8792, which took effect on June 19 2000.

As a digital signature law, the Act seeks to encourage e-commerce by establishing a legal framework to increase the trustworthiness of online transactions.
